Former Undisputed Super-Welterweight World Titlist Jermell Charlo Could Return To The Ring Soon

Charlo posted a training video clip indicating that he intends to resume fighting

Long inactive, Jermell Charlo surfaced out of the woodwork this week. The boxer posted a short video workout clip and informing his followers on Instagram that “154 is mine until I’m finished.”

Jermell Charlo, 35, is the former junior middleweight as well as middleweight champion. He last fought in September 2023, resuming from a 29-month layoff with a victory over Jose Benavidez Jr. The fighter has reportedly struggled with mental health alongside legal issues outside of the ropes.

The American boxer became a world title-holder in his 28th fight in 2016, then attained undisputed status on May 14, 2022, when he knocked out Brian Castano in their rematch to obtain the WBO super-welterweight belt, which was the missing portion of the puzzle to his WBC, WBA Super, IBF alongside Ring Magazine titles.

The 'Iron Man' last boxed when he stepped up two divisions to contest Canelo Alvarez for the undisputed super-middleweight championship. In spite of being dropped in round seven, he battled to the last bell, though was decided unanimously with scores of 109-118 twice as well as 108-119.

Former undisputed super-welterweight world titlist Jermell Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs) could return to the ring soon.

According to Charlo’s note, it seems he’s insinuating that he wants a straight title shot against one of the titleholders at 154, probably against WBC and WBO junior middleweight title-holder Sebastian Fundora. The World Boxing Council (WBC) rendered Jermell ‘Champion in Recess’ in 2024, which denotes he can resume and fight for their belt anytime he wants.

At the tail end of Charlo’s Instagram post, it says, “154 King is back.” Critics say it is hard to take seriously due to his inactivity. They argue that when Jermell was still active, he never defeated any high-level pugilists except a young 22-year-old Erickson Lubin.

His record in world title bouts currently is at 5-2-1, 4 KOs.
